Create a Blog
There are sites like WordPress.com and Blogger.com that allow you to build a website for free.
There are a couple disavantages. (at least in some people's eyes)
You don't get a URL such as yourname.com. Your URL will contain the domain of your host as well.
You don't own it.
There are typically other limitations. You may not be able to advertise with Adsense or you may have unwanted ads on your site.
These sites are great for learning a bit about the Internet and getting your feet wet.
Make a Website on a Website Service
Then there are sites that allow you to build a free website where they provide you with templates, and all kinds of goodies that look really appealing. You'll typically notice that they have at least two levels - a free level and then a premium level. They may offer levels in between.
The free level will provide you with the site builder, but your site will have ads, you can't have a custom domain or email, etc. The next level gives you an ad free site but still no custom domain or email... You get the idea.
In talking to people who have used some of these sites I've found that they're paying too much and not getting the results they could be getting if they'd have simply set up their own hosting with their own website and installed WordPress on it.
What often happens is that these type of sites make it so easy to get started. Then you realize that you need some of the premium features. At that point you've spent a fair amount of time developing your own website and you hate to walk away from all of that work. The way your site is set up you can't take it with you, so you quickly realize that it's much easier to pay the $29.99 per month for their premium service. And they've got another paying customer!
Not that this is a bad thing! Not at all. These guys have invested a lot of time and money in providing a means for you to build your own website very easily and quickly. They offer instruction and support (premium members) and that has it's value.
If that's the way you want to go, then I'd suggest planning up front to paying whatever the premium monthly fee is. More than likely you'll need it if you're serious about your website.
Make Your Own Website (Best option IMO!)
The best option for making your own website is to go ahead and spend a few dollars and do it right!
Let's take a look at what is involved.
Get hosting for around $8 per month. You can get it for less if you shop around or only need 1 domain.
Buy your domain for about $10 per year.
Install WordPress on your new domain
That's it!! Those three steps and you have your own website up and running in a matter of minutes! My free guide walks you through all that. It will take you more time to read the guide than it will to actually get your site set up! You'll have spent $18 - $30 bucks depending on how many domains you buy and the hosting package you choose.
Going forward you'll be looking at a monthly payment to your host for around $5 to $13 bucks - again depending on the package, and you'll have to renew your domain once a year for around $10 bucks. As you can see, the cost is minimal. You can't go out to eat for what it costs to set up a website!
The advantages! You have your own site. Your own custom domain, email accounts, customer service, ad free website, access to hundreds if not thousands of free themes, access to amazing paid themes that offer further support.
